Mr Mandela has no time for Mr Mugabe. Back in 2000, he called on Zimbabwe's leader to retire. Nothing has been heard of Mr Mandela on the subject of Zimbabwe since that time.
While much of the Western world, and especially Britain, where Mr Mandela will mark his 90th birthday this week with a concert in London, are puzzled by this, most Africans fully understand. They do not expect Mr Mandela to speak out against Mr Mugabe.
